Detailed Description
Wongapsa, located at Sangil-ri, Hejae-myeon, Muan County , is one of the three ‘gapsa's, the other two being Bulgapsa in Younggwang and Dogapsa in Youngam. Legend tells that this temple was built by high priest Uisang, but there is no concrete evidence to back this up.
There is also an assertion that Wongapsa was once called ‘Gangsansa', from the name of the mountain that surrounds Wongapsa. According to this version, the disciples of the temple raised funds to build a new temple when the old temple collapsed. It is said that the disciples of Mokwooam also helped in rebuilding the temple, which was completed in 1908.
Many experts say that it seems that the name of the temple was originally Gangsan-sa, but later was changed to Wongapsa. The temple is a member of the Jogye Order.
