The Mokpo University Museum began in 1981 as a depository for regional history, and formally joined the association of museums in 1982. Over the past 20 years it has researched and accumulated traditional cultural assets and ancient culture sites in the southwest coastal areas and nearby islands.
The Mokpo University Museum has currently completed an investigation into 130 cultural sites. Among these, 60 are excavations and 70 are academic studies such as index research. To date it has published 90 academic series of books.
In particular, the museum has received support from the cities and counties of Jeollanam-do to establish a long-term plan for investigating the current status of cultural sites. According to the plan, it has completed precision investigations on cultural sites in 14 cities and counties in the southwest coastal area (as of 2002).
