Mt. Seungdal Mt. Seungdal Mt. Seungdal

Mount Seungdal , which lies across Chonggye-myeon and Mongtan-myeon of Muan County , is a relatively low mountain with a height of just 332.5 m above sea level. It is located at the end of Baekdu Daegan. From the top, the mountain provides an excellent view of the west coast, Mokpo and Youngsan Lake to the south, offering a birds eye view of Youngsan River to the east. It is a famous mountain with warm breezes even during winter.

The name Seungdal was given in 1122 (rule of King Injong, Koryo Dynasty). The priest Wonmyung from the country of Won ( Mongolia ) had come to this mountain and expanded Buddhism greatly. It is said that 500 believers came to him and awoke to the truth. Thus, the name, Seungdal (reach achievement).

Mount Seungdal has many historical Buddhist sites, including Beopcheonsa, Mokwooam, Chongji Saji, Seokjangseung, and Buddhist statues. According to the theory of divination based on topography, those who bury their ancestors on this mountain will become sages, high officials, or royalty. This is why there are so many graves in this mountain, compared to others.

The most popular hiking course of Mt. Seungdal is the return course, starting from the Mokpo University main entrance then on to Maebong ~ Gitbong ~ Chunji Gol and back to the entrance of Mokpo University. Another popular course is passing by Harujae and trekking south to reach the peak, then descending along the west ridge to the Mokpo University campus. On weekends there are many families who come with children to hike the mountain, as the course is very gradual and easy.
