The Muan Sangdong Field Songs were often sung by villagers when engaged in cooperative labor such as rice planting, removing young rice seeds from seedbeds, weeding rice paddies, and harvesting.
They are the most representative field songs from the Young San River area featuring a highly systematic rhythm. Each song has a rhythm and beat that help set an efficient pace for the task that the group of workers is engaged in. For example, the rice-planting song ‘Ginsangsa' has a steady beat, while the rice-weeding songs ‘Musam song' have either a slow and steady beat (long deul rae gi song) or a more quickly paced beat (frequent deul rae gi song “Poonjang song”, Jaeho song).
All the songs reveal a high level of sophistication that could only have happened over a long period of development. In particular, the ‘Musam song' and ‘long song' both express long and echoing features of the field songs in the Young San River area. The Sang Dong Field Song shows the strong and dynamic spirit of male labor songs.
